İstiklal Caddesi: Tünel to Galatasaray Meydani
MAP
Leaving the upper İstiklal Tünel station and following the antique tramline round onto İstiklal Caddesi, the first sight of interest is the beautiful curvilinear Art Nouveau facade of the Botter House, built in 1901 by Italian architect D’Aronco for the Dutch tailor to Sultan Abdülhamit II. A little way beyond, best reached by heading down steep Kumbaracı Sokak, the pretty Anglican Crimea Memorial Church or Christ Church was constructed in 1868 to commemorate those who fell in the Crimean War. The architect was G.E. Street, also responsible for the Royal Courts of Justice in London. It’s attractively set in a green, walled compound, and visitors are requested to leave a ŧ10 donation, but it’s not always open – try a Sunday morning service. Further up on the right, steps lead down to St Mary Draperis (Mon & Wed–Sat 10am–noon, Tues & Sun 2–6pm; Mass Mon–Fri 8am, Sun 9am), a Catholic church designed by Semprini in 1904 on the site of a 1678 original.
On the opposite side of the street, the defunct Patisserie Markiz, still advertised by gold-leaf lettering on the glass, has a stunning fin-de-siècle interior with a pair of faïence tile wall panels, Le Printemps and L’Automne, imported from France. It’s now a fast-food café. Just north of Markiz is a pretty nineteenth-century arcade, Cite de Syrie. Opposite the arcade is the Borusan Arts & Cultural Centre (İstiklal Cad 213 0212 336 3280, borusansanat.com), which is home to one of Turkey’s leading private orchestras and an art gallery. Continuing up İstiklal on the right is the impressive Dutch consulate, the Palais de Hollande, built in Neoclassical style in 1858. On the same side further up the Merkez Han, owned by Koç University, houses the Research Centre for Anatolian Studies, which has regular free exhibitions of an archeological and historical nature. Back on the right, set back from the road, is the very attractive St Anthoine (daily 8am–7pm; Mass Sun 10am), a Franciscan church with a red-brick Neogothic facade, built in 1913 on the site of a much earlier church.
